We are a group of herp enthusiasts located throughout Maine.

In 1992, a group of reptile enthusiasts started meeting at the fire station in Bowdoinham, Maine, and this would be the beginning of the Maine Herpetological Society (MHS). For 30 years, members have come and gone but one thing has remained consistent- Reptile passion!
The sharing of knowledge and experiences with people of all walks of life and ages, whether exotic or native reptiles, has always been first and foremost.
The first Maine Reptile Expo was held next door to the fire station, at the Grange hall in Bowdoinham and was simply just members exhibiting their animals to the public. From 1992 to 1999 there were no reptiles sold, it was not until 2000 that the MHS, started bringing in breeders from New England to sell reptiles to the public.
Over the years, expos have been held in Bowdoinham, Waterville, Lewiston, Bangor, Westbrook, South Portland and since 2019, is now back in Lewiston, where it has grown exponentially.
Now in 2023, our focus is to grow the expo and continue to provide the public with an event that is family friendly, educational and where they can purchase high quality reptiles from local breeders, supplies and food at reasonable prices and we hope you will follow us as we continue to grow!

Our goals are to increase knowledge of our reptilian and amphibian friends through education, outreach, and experiential learning opportunities, to promote proper husbandry practices in the trade and we believe in sharing our knowledge about the animals we keep, educating each other in our varied fields of expertise, and fighting the stigma surrounding reptiles and amphibians of all shapes and sizes.

If you have an interest in reptiles, amphibians, or even arachnids we encourage you to reach out and you are welcome regardless of experience.
